NSS-6 to serve as high-powered platform for
Smart Digital Communications’ two-way satellite IP network services
SINGAPORE, June 13, 2005 – New Skies Satellites (NYSE: NSE), the global satellite communications company, today announced that it has signed a significant new agreement with Malaysia’s SMART Digital Communications to deliver two-way broadband Internet transmissions in Southeast Asia via the NSS-6 satellite.
Using multiple transponders on NSS-6, SMART will offer its Ku-band two-way broadband satellite services for cost-effective, reliable and rapidly deployable applications like broadband Internet access, virtual private networks, file transfer, distance learning, VoIP, multicast services and video content delivery. The initial capacity contracted on NSS-6 gives SMART the ability to deploy its state-of-the-art Viasat Surfbeam DOCSIS network for as many as 10,000 remote terminals.
Matthew Oh, New Skies’ director of sales for Asia, said: “This agreement with SMART is a significant win for New Skies and demonstrates the versatility and efficiency of our satellite network in delivering any form of communications. We’re very excited to be working with a strong, fast growing company with a premium offering such as SMART.”
Khairuddin Abd Rahman, SMART’s CEO, said “By combining a shared hub with the unique advantages of New Skies’ NSS-6 satellite, our network will enable service providers and enterprises to offer both broadband Internet access and video delivery service while eliminating the large up-front investment in a hub and associated hardware and management services. Now, anybody within the satellite’s vast Southeast Asia footprint can have access to our broadband Internet and video delivery services.”
SMART’s network is a high-performance IP system that provides high-bandwidth satellite forward and return channels. The system offers broadband-on-demand IP multi-service access from a central hub to remote locations with an asymmetric broadband return channel. By utilizing NSS-6 as the transmission platform, SMART’s network bypasses the traditional bottlenecks associated with the terrestrial infrastructure to provide the most remote locations throughout Malaysia and Southeast Asia with the highest-quality broadband services.
