New Skies Satellites joins Alcatel Space for demonstration of two-way broadband multimedia communications
19 June 2001
The Hague, The Netherlands, June 19, 2001 -- New Skies Satellites is joining Alcatel Space during the Paris Air Show, taking place this week, to demonstrate an advanced interactive multimedia Ku-band satellite system, which combines digital video and Internet traffic into a single data stream.

The demonstration, being conducted at Alcatel Space’s facilities in Nanterre, France, involves sending IP traffic from a hub over the New Skies NSS-K satellite at 338.5 E. to a remote 1.2 meter terminal at 4.2 Mbps. The return link, via the NSS-K satellite, is at 384 Kbps. The content is sent using DVB (digital video broadcast) technology which enables the use of low-cost receiving electronics and can make data rates of several tens of Megabits possible.

Access from the remote terminal to servers located at the hub enables private network applications, as well as access to the Internet backbone. Moreover, connections at the hub to the PSTN enable Voice-over-IP connections.

Applications for two-way broadband links include Direct-To-Home video, Internet access with net-browsing and video streaming, Voice-over-IP, video-conferencing, distance learning and telemedicine. Using satellite networks for these applications is a cost-effective option for many communications requirements - particularly in countries where local telephone calls to ISPs are expensive and connections are highly congested or impossible via terrestrial links.

Emmanuel Hébrard, New Skies' Vice President Satellite Services Strategy, said, "We are glad to be participating in this demonstration of broadband communications via satellite. Combining digital video and Internet traffic into a single data stream gives customers enormous scope for versatile communications for a wide variety of applications.

“Over the coming two and a half years, New Skies expects to double its capacity by launching three satellites, optimally designed for these kinds of broadband multimedia applications.”
