One of Taiwan’s top telecom providers signs for 65 Mbps of New Skies satellite capacity
20 June 2001
Singapore, June 14, 2001: New Skies Satellites, (AEX, NYSE: NSK), the global satellite communications company, has signed a major contract with Taiwanese telecom company New Century Info Comm (NCIC) for 65 Megabits (Mbps) of satellite capacity to be used primarily for Internet backbone connectivity.

NCIC, which was recently awarded fixed and mobile licenses in Taiwan, will use New Skies’ Internet service, trademarked IPsysSM , to connect to the U.S. Internet backbone.

“New carriers and ISPs in Taiwan are increasingly adding satellite links to their mix of solutions for Internet connectivity,” said Dr. Eui Koh, Vice President of Asia Pacific Sales for New Skies. “Satellite networks offer these customers a cost-efficient platform that can be deployed quickly and flexibly.”

“With the growing number of ISPs in Taiwan, there is a shortage of high quality, affordable capacity to carry Internet traffic. New Skies is proving time and again that it can deliver this capacity, tailored to each customer’s needs.”

About IPsysSM
IPsysSM creates a direct connection from the Internet backbone to an ISP’s local service point using a high-speed Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) or Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC) connections.

Multi-homing satellite links enable ISPs to offer their customers one-hop connections from the global Internet backbone, thus reducing latency and IP packet loss. The IPsysSM service makes use of direct peering with Tier 1 Internet backbone providers for more direct and thus more robust connections.

Currently, New Skies provides over 700 Mbps of Internet connectivity directly to ISP customers around the world through five DVB platforms and SCPC carrier services covering India, South and East Africa, Central Africa, Asia and Latin America, making New Skies one of the largest Internet-over-satellite players in the industry.
