New NSS-7 high-powered satellite will link more than 500 rural and semi-urban towns and villages across the country

The Hague, The Netherlands, June 27, 2002 – New Skies Satellites N.V. (AEX, NYSE: NSK), the global satellite communications company, today announced that the new NSS-7 Atlantic Ocean region satellite will be used to link more than 500 towns and villages throughout the Dominican Republic for a rural telecommunications network currently being deployed by CODETEL, a Verizon company.

Many of the communities involved will gain access to telephony and data services for the first time ever.

CODETEL won the government-sponsored rural telecommunications project with a proposal based on the technical specifications of NSS-7, including the satellite’s high transmission power and comprehensive coverage of the Caribbean country. The network will consist of a hub in Santo Domingo, which will access NSS-7 to relay voice and data traffic to Ultra Small Aperture Terminals (USATs) located in rural and semi-urban communities throughout the Dominican Republic. USAT antennas measure less than one meter in diameter and are extremely cost-effective.

“NSS-7’s powerful coverage of our country allows for greater throughput and lower-cost USAT transmission systems. This enabled us to submit a proposal to the Dominican government that more than satisfied the technical requirements of the project while also demonstrating the greatest cost-efficiency,” said Miguel Fadul, senior manager of international facilities for CODETEL. “Through the teamwork of our two companies, hundreds of communities across the country will finally have access to high-quality communications services.”

“Rural telecommunications projects like this truly demonstrate the inherent advantages of satellite communications, including nearly-instantaneous ubiquitous coverage and the ability to broadcast from one location to many, and at the same time make a real difference in peoples’ lives,” said Dolores Martos, New Skies’ vice president of Latin American and Caribbean sales. “We are proud to be working with CODETEL, one of the leading telecommunications companies in the Caribbean and Latin America, to bring communications services to under-served communities.”

NSS-7 was launched on April 16, 2002 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana and commenced commercial services on May 30, 2002. The satellite was designed to replace New Skies’ NSS-803 and NSS-K at 338.5 degrees east, combining the extensive television and Internet traffic from the two satellites to debut as a premier video and IP neighborhood in the Atlantic Ocean region. With NSS-7 now operational, New Skies is currently transitioning customers from NSS-K and NSS-803. The company expects to complete the process by late August.

NSS-7, a Lockheed Martin A2100AX model spacecraft, boasts nearly 3,500 MHz of capacity spread over 36 C-band and 36 Ku-band transponders. Eleven high-powered coverage beams are capable of broadcasting video, Internet and data traffic throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
