digital cinema as well as digital video and radio distribution

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, October 7, 2003 - New Skies Satellites N.V. (AEX, NYSE: NSK), the global satellite communications company, today announced that Intertrade Brasil, the satellite business unit of telecom service provider Casablanca, is expanding its service on New Skies’ NSS-806 satellite with an advanced digital platform for video and IP content distribution services throughout Brazil and Latin America.

Focused on video, audio and data distribution for cable headends and corporate users, the possible applications that can be offered over this new broadband platform include file transfer, software upgrades, live transmission for corporate applications, Internet/Intranet access, content distribution for kiosks and shops, program distribution for radio stations, distance learning, corporate communications and digital cinema, among many others.

“Using NSS-806, an established distribution platform for both video and IP traffic in Latin America, we are confident in our ability to successfully market these very competitive, innovative and reliable services. We believe we have a valuable combination of technology and the best satellite power and coverage, allowing us to provide services in Brazil, the Americas and Europe concurrently,” says Alex Pimentel, technology director of Intertrade Brasil.

Dolores Martos, New Skies’ vice president of sales for Latin America, said: “NSS-806 currently delivers a large share of Latin America’s television programming because of its excellent coverage of the region and its access to thousands of cable systems. It is also a leading platform for Internet backbone connectivity, so it is ideally suited for both broadcast distribution and the delivery of IP traffic. Intertrade Brasil’s new service combines these strengths to create a premier IP content distribution network.”

Intertrade Brasil’s current customers include:

  • Conexão Médica, a company focused on continued professional development for the medical market, which is using the IP content distribution network to deliver data, live video transmissions and distance learning services to hospitals and clinics;
  • Sat América Programadora Ltda, a film distributor using the video distribution service (MCPC-DVB platform) to deliver programming to cable operators in Brazil; and
  • Some major FM Radio stations, such as Radio Metropolina, which are using the distribution services for their special summer beach events and winter programs, following their audiences and interacting with them remotely.

    One of the most interesting and cutting-edge applications is digital cinema. Two high performance digital projectors installed in the movie theaters of TeleImage will receive films using the IP/DVB receivers, and special software for content distribution will ensure transmission reliability and the successful file transfer.

    New Skies’ NSS-806 satellite is one of the leading video transmission platforms in Latin America and provides a highly reliable, point-to-multipoint distribution system for reception in thousands of remote sites. Located at 319.5 degrees east longitude, NSS-806 provides comprehensive coverage of Brazil and Mercosur as well as the rest of the Americas and Western Europe. NSS-806 currently carries more than 120 television channels, including most of Latin America’s national broadcasters, to more than 5,000 cable systems throughout this broad coverage area.
